Nuggets of Wisdom from Dr. John
Short excerpts from different channeled life readings
Conductor: He says, “I have a friend who is a Mormon. He vows that the true gospel was revealed by Joseph Smith and that Mormon-ism is the truth faith. What can you say about this?”
Dr. John: The history of earth will give validity to my statement that always there has been an attempt on the part of earthbeings to say, “Lo here, and Lo there” in their search for truth. Yet never has all of Truth been contained in one earth frame-work of thought. And never will it be contained in one earth framework of thought, for Truth is beyond containment.
I would not venture to present a Gospel of Truth from my admittedly advantageous viewpoint, as one who speaks outside of earthliving to those in earthliving. I could give a version of Truth according to the expanded spiritual insight, which is mine over yours as an earth being. But even so, what I would give – while it may very well be quite fully expanded over present earth concepts of Truth – still it could not contain all of truth, for Truth is uncontainable.
Yet Truth has been expressed many times, in many ways. There is that which is of the nature of Divine Truth in the Mormon teaching. There is that which is of the nature of Divine Truth in the Hindu teaching, in the Buddhist teaching, in Zoroastrism, in the Jewish faith. Wherever man has reached out with sincerity and a plea for Truth, that outreach has been honored. But it has been man himself who periodically has said, “This is the only Truth.”
Conductor: So man’s claims go a bit beyond what has been given to any man? It is true that almost every religion has, in the past anyway, claimed that it was THE religion, THE divine revelation, THE correct way to God. The Catholics claim that only the Pope has the keys to heaven and could let a person in or keep a person out.
Dr. John: Of course for any religion to speak forth with such authority was always to draw and to hold individuals to that teaching which was being represented. And many times this is a good thing.
Conductor: Well, that’s true. A very great positivism has been needed to draw and hold – oh particularly the weaker members of the human race, those who don’t think too much for themselves. Those individuals who are quite impressed by the very positive claims, who can be drawn to a better way of living, by very positive claims. (2539: 7-8) – This life reading was given March 1966-Ed.
Conductor: She has an interesting question about religion. She states that the words church, Jesus and Christ affect her strangely. She feels this sort of thing tends to separate people and wonders why we can’t have a religion and worship without the words Christ, Mohammed, Buddha or anyone else. Just one unified Creator, so that everyone could gather together without this separation element.
Dr. John: First of all, God, the Creator, the Source of Life, has a nature of unity, yes, but also one of diversity. And there is goodness in diversity. The world’s leaders of religious thought have been souls who in their beingness and in their teachings have given emphasis to particular qualities of the overall God-nature.
To truly understand the whole, whether it be the whole of God, or the whole of any other subject, it is good to concentrate upon the various parts which go into the whole. The human instrument of understanding does not have the capacity to embrace the whole, whether the whole is Creator, whether the whole is Truth. The whole of God’s truth is so much greater than the parts that the parts must come to comprehension of the whole through emphasis upon the parts! It is the emphasis on the parts, and then the uniting of the parts, which brings a comprehension of the whole.
The soul known as Confucius brought the concept of wisdom as being the goal for human beings to attain. That is a very true and valid part of the whole, which was emphasized in that way. And the one who became known as Gautama Buddha emphasized the aspect of peace, which is a vital portion of the beingness of the whole.
The one known as Jesus brought the understanding of the love-aspect of the whole. Because souls are individual, are diversified in their beingness, it is quite right and quite good that there be the seeking of an understanding of the whole, by understanding the parts. That is not to be condemned.
Certainly to settle upon an emphasis on a part, losing sight of the whole and assigning wholeness to the part, is equally short-sighted and unwise.
But the very quality of individuality makes for the expression of the whole in different parts. We do not think you would ever find unity and oneness in consciousness of the whole in the earth frame, for you do not find that in the cosmic schools of learning. There are cosmic schools of learning, there are different planes of being, because of the diversification of the whole. (3657:7-8) – This life reading was given August 1974
Conductor: She asks, “I often try to pray and it seems that my prayers are not heard. How can I reconcile this with God’s plan for me?”
Dr. John: She can if she puts the idea of her life in the framework of being one of many lifetimes. Here again, reincarnation holds the answer in part and also the pull of the future. That is what God’s plan is for the soul of the personality.
Many things that seem good to a personality may in truth be very good, but it may be that soul has experienced those things in recent personality expressions and is to have a different kind of experience now.
It may be that the soul has wasted opportunities in the past that would have brought it these experiences which now the personality reaches for.
It may be that the reaching of the personality for specific desires is intended to create a desire within the soul that the soul has been lacking. The personality expression of that soul can begin a desire that can then snowball through future personalities and come out into fulfillment...
To have faith in prayer and to pray specifically, and then to say, “My prayer is not valid. Prayer does not work,” when these specific things do not come about, can only be said when one has a very narrow view of life. One must learn to think of one’s personality self as being only one expression, an earth expression in the experience of the soul which that personality represents.
Then one will pray for that which is right for the soul to experience through the personality. The personality is the instrument for the soul’s growth and expansion. The personality is made to grow the soul, to give the soul certain experiences it cannot have unless it has a personality expression. (3390)
Dr. John: We would caution the personality at this point not to fall into the trap of many metaphysical students of thinking that in a manner of speaking, their life is in their hands, that they have all power, and that they set the goals, and if they do not achieve the goals it is because they are not thinking or doing correctly.
Now that approach is a part of the picture and a very important part. However, added to that approach is the understanding that there is a larger purpose and plan than the personality in its own thinking and planning can take hold of and direct. There are forces from past lives, and there are purposes in future lives that affect the present.
This is why those in metaphysical framework who seek to commander the present lifetime according to their own positive vision, fine as that may be, do not always have 100% results, you see.
Follow the pathway of positive thinking, of structuring the pattern of the life with the elements of goodness that you as a personality reach for. Hold the mental thought that this good will come to her.
But at the same time, having painted a picture mentally and put in it the positive elements desired, don’t frame the picture. Don’t call it complete. Paint the picture as completely as possible, putting in all the elements that seem good. But then, in a manner of speaking, turn the attention away from the picture. Walk away from it.
Leave it on an easel as though one were a student in a studio who had completed an assignment but left that assignment there, knowing that the master teacher would come in and examine it. Then, according to the wisdom and the greater perspective of that master teacher some element in the picture might be crossed out. Other elements of good of which the painter had no recognition might be added by the master teacher, you see.
So here is your balance between having a goal and reaching for it, using the metaphysical principles which are true and valid principles, a balance between that approach and the approach summed up very easily in the phrase “let go and let God.” (3141)
Question: It is said that we come to Earth to experience, but it is also said that we come to Earth to learn to be detached from all desires and attachments. Then when we become saturated with them, we become detached. This sounds contradictory. Please explain this.
Dr. John: A good question, and it is contradictory, Ma’am. There are those who feel that since the native realm of the soul is spirit, it was a mistake for the spirit ever to come into flesh. We believe this is an inadequate view.
It is true that to be too thoroughly identified with the flesh is wrong. There must be a certain detachment. On the other hand, there also must be a certain vital attachment to have the experiences which are gained only through incarnation.
Partly this rests back upon the idea of the nature of God. The idea of a rather detached God who would view human incarnation as a rather sad and stupid mistake—that idea of a God could lie back of the idea that man should detach himself from all that would attach him to Earth-living.
But that creates a spiritual zombie, and it loses the value that is in incarnate experience. So there must be an entering into Earthlife, an entering into Earth experiences and their manifold nature in order for the molding effect of the experience, the experiences of joy, the experiences of greed, experiences of success, experiences of very strenuous effort and even of failure. If the person does not enter into this, then the experiences go for naught and are wasted.
Now the soul itself can identify with the person and get the experiences, and must. But if the soul identifies too much with one of its incarnations, then the soul itself can become stained by some of these emotions (primarily). That is unwise and the young soul that does this then has to learn to take a little greater detachment in its attachment.
Well, I find that I’m speaking somewhat at length, but you at least get my opinion, that there must be a vital interest in the experiences of incarnate life for the soul to take mastery of these experiences. Thank you for the question. (8038)
Stretching the Person to the Limit
Dr. John: Upon more than one occasion the person will be stretched to the limit, because life will do this. And this is one way in which a child of God on any level will grow, by being stretched to the limit and then pressing himself to find more and being pressed until he discovers he can do more and know more than he thought he could. At that time he has more access to help beyond himself than he had realized when he was not pressed to the limit of his own abilities. (7384:41)
Question: How are we to view this new science of eugenics, and how does it fit in with the overall plan, God’s plan, for planet Earth?
Dr. John: It is one possibility that has opened up of the overcoming of some of the diseases and disabilities of the physical form, of making the soul’s experiences in incarnation less burdened, freeing it to accomplish its purpose better.
Many advances can be used wrongly. Possibly the expression of beauty in music is at times used in a way somewhat contrary to God’s ideas of value. Knowledge can be misused, especially a small amount of knowledge. As the greater knowledge is gained, there is more chance of it being used correctly.
As the understanding grows of what human life is all about and that the evolution of the God-child is the basic purpose here, and the bringing in of the knowledge of God’s way and the enthusiastic acceptance and following even with desire of God’s way, this will be the framework within which the constructive application of new knowledge can be, more assured.
Eugenics - to be well-born - actually is more important than to be royally born, and in former generations, to be royally born was considered very, very important. But now you know better than that. You know the significance of the lives that are spent in the growth experiences, the basic growth experiences of the soul while incarnate through its various personhoods. And so to be well born (is more important).
As I search the concept bank of my channel, I find that there is a memory of a story that was written in some magazine about a couple expecting a child. The child was born horribly inadequate, deformed in some way or other.
And the kind doctor said to them, “If you let nature take its course, this child will make its transition within probably a week. Of if you put your whole lives in pawn to preserve the breath in this child’s body, it may live to be 10 or 12 years old and then will make its transition, but will be deformed, will not be able to express normally through mind or the senses or speech.” And the parents, expressing their love in the more intelligent and higher, more spiritual, way, said, “Let nature take its course.” And the child died. A year later a perfectly healthy, normal, robust little boy was born to them who was filled with joy from the very moment of his birth. That joy probably from the soul at the parents having chosen aright to give it a life of much more happiness and value than the former would have been.

Dr. John on Free Will
Dr. John: The soul has freedom, but not complete freedom. As the soul progresses in its proper use of freedom it can be given more freedom. The freedom it can be given is measured somewhat by the measure of the soul’s responsibility.
The soul does not have absolute freedom because God has set certain limits. There are certain great basic truths, and the soul does not have the freedom to go beyond these basic truths of the universe – even as scientists do not have the freedom to cause materials to act contrary to the native nature of those materials.
Within this large framework of the limits which God has set in the very nature of things, the soul as it grows wise comes to set for itself not larger limits of freedom but in a sense narrower limits – I trust you will understand me – until it says, “Not my will but Thine be done. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done.” And then it is, as the soul gives over its freedom unto God, that the soul discovers it has a greater freedom. As an earth illustration consider your experience as a child: When you recognized the wisdom of your parents’ limitations upon you, and accepted those limitations, you were given a greater amount of freedom than when you did not understand and accept the limitations.
“Commit thy way unto the Lord and He shall direct thy path” is perhaps the end point of this progression in the acceptance of limitations and the discovery of greater freedom within the acceptance of the limitations. But it is not in the kindergarten stages of earth lives nor of cosmic learning that the soul learns this. To know the truth of ones own being is, even for a soul, to know the truth that sets it free from the limitations of its self-ignorance, and from the limitations of its own willfulness. It is an advanced learning for a soul even as it is for a person (and the soul often learns this through its personality expressions), this learning that as we truly commit ourselves completely unto the Lord God - and He does truly direct our path - that then we are free indeed. Dr. John on the Purpose and Value of Psychic Development
Question: Dr. John, what is the purpose and the value of psychic development?
Dr. John: This is an unusual question in such a group as this isn’t it? But a basic question.
Without some psychic development, some growing awareness of and touch with the other realms of which you are a part (along with the physical realm), you are limited in your perception and experience of your natural birthright. It is like going through life color blind, or with no fingers to touch soft velvet or a smooth skin, or no olfactory sense to distinguish the aroma of a good steak charcoal-broiling.
The human race is sadly blind and deficient in its understanding, and in its wealth of experience, until it does become psychically aware and perceptive. You are natives first of the non-material realm of spirit, secondly of the material realm of physical things. “Psychic development” is the term usually used for the first expansion of consciousness into the non-material realm. This is your true native realm.
True, a certain stability – as I have indicated – is highly advisable. And that stability is usually acquired and evidenced by a certain mastery of life in the realm of material beingness. We highly recommend that you achieve enough mastery of the visible realm, and become a reasonably stable person in incarnate expression, before pushing further. Then let’s see what more there is.
This may be a romantic answer. But possibly I am a romanticist. (8105)
Dr. John on pets, the earth as an entity, and dragons, unicorns, wizards, etc.
The first answer is in response to a member’s guilty concern about not being with a beloved dog when he died:
Dr. John: Well, this certainly evidences a fine outreach of responsibility to a loved one on Martha’s part, and that is a good trait. I do not see the occasion and I do not know the dog’s consciousness at that time. However, a dog’s consciousness does not assess blame on a moral or ethical basis as a human’s consciousness does. The dog quite likely missed her, missed the consolation. If the dog was conscious after the accident, the dog reached out for her definitely in terms of the dog’s own consciousness, but does not blame her. There would be a seeking but not an affixing of guilt. Is this clear?
Q. Yes, Dr. John. Thank you. She has another question, “If he still has an existence, what is it like and what will his future be like?”
A. When an individual animal goes back in spirit after incarnation, it goes more into God’s reservoir of that animal’s beingness energies. Now it does carry some influence of individuation to the extent that it has known itself as an individual. If it has been a beloved pet, it brings more of this than if it had been simply an animal in the wild. Now the animal does not, however, hold its energies together for incarnation again as a soul does. A soul possesses individuation because it is an individuated portion of beingness from God Himself. An animal is not. An animal comes from the “group beingness” (of God), which is why it usually evidences a “group mind” and is so ruled by instinct--not completely but to quite an extent, you see--the group reactions to a situation or to certain stimuli.
Now it is possible for those energies to be held together, if not by the individual animal’s own individual consciousness, then by other forces working with that pool of beingness so that a subsequent incarnation from that canine, feline, bovine, equine, or whatever field of animal beingness, may have most of the beingness and consciousness of the previous individuated animal, you see.
This is possible. The great thing up ahead, of course, is the time when the human society has been founded in accordance with the truth and values of God and can then start to bring individuation into the animal kingdom and eventually into the plant kingdom and even into that realm of elemental consciousnesses associated with the mineral kingdom. This is quite a long task and it would look quite formidable, but it can be done by those who will be in charge at that time. I think this will be after I have graduated from Earth responsibilities, but it would be an interesting task for new Elohim associated with Earth to undertake. The raising to individual self-consciousness, of specific animals is going to involve a lot of problems. A lot of questions must be settled. Possibly 5,000 years from now souls may be working in that area—possibly sooner than that…
Q. Her next question is, “Is the earth itself an entity that can feel, even to the extent of being a friend or foe to a person?”
A. To a certain extent, yes. There are elemental consciousnesses, some of which, although in a line of development far different from the human, have quite a noble nature and exalted development. However, those consciousnesses do not demean themselves by being either foe or friend of individual humans, and it would demean them to be a particular friend to an individual human. She might want to think about that for a while. For they have a majesty of their own and of their own relationship with God. They have their purpose of beingness and their destiny.
Now a few individuals can establish a rapport with them. But they do not establish that rapport with these majestic lords of different aspects of nature simply to manipulate them. The lords ignore and somewhat despise those humans who would so demean the lords.
Q. “Does the wind, especially during storms or at night, have an inherent power of its own, something more than the kinetic energy of the individual molecule?”
A. Well, really no. She is speaking about an inherent power. No. They can strike conditioned psychological responses in different individuals that go beyond the inherent power of the wind. Likewise, there are intelligences that work with the wind, and again there can be a certain rapport established by individuals who are themselves prepared in their beingness for this, and they will not misuse such a rapport. This is not a matter of magick, black or white. This is a matter of a companionship of different beings under God.
Q. “Dragons, unicorns, wizards, etc., do they or did they ever exist on earth or on another planet, plane, or time?”
A. Well, on the astral plane there are many kinds of beings produced by even the disordered minds that have creative power, and so you will have dragons, unicorns, and most anything else. However, stay away from that realm. These do not have much force of beingness. They dissipate almost as quickly as they are formed. Now on the positive side, these can be symbols entering the mythology of man as a whole, as the human society, but also entering the personal life of man. And as symbols they gather up what they symbolize into a usable entity of a sort which has some power in itself and can be given additional power and also can be used by guides and teachers constructively, and by other forces, possibly nonconstructively, in an individual’s experience and consciousness. Yes.
Q. This is how they get into our mythology and other literature? Through the astral?
A. Yes. Through the astral, and through their symbolism, and through the other ways I have mentioned, and other ways of which I do not know, probably. (7229)
